Things to Consider when Choosing a Refiner

  • Is your buyer licensed to store the scrap? Can they present an active EPA ID number?
  • Can you walk into their refinery?
  • If you search them on the internet, what do you find? When searching, be sure to scroll through a few pages since negative information can now be pushed back so it is harder to find.
  • Are they gaining your trust by telling you that they donate a portion of your scrap to a charity? How much is that donation and is there proof of the amount donated?
  • Are they an actual refinery or do they just “say” they are? Google them!
  • Do they pay you and then leave? How do they know the value of your metal without being able to analyze it? They cannot legitimately value your metals in your office just as you could not tell a patient if they have a cavity without taking an x-ray.
  • Do you receive a deposit and a second check for the balance of your scrap once the work is completed? Can you take your return back in precious metal, bullion or collectible coins?
  • Is your buyer endorsed by an organization? Paid endorsements mean that your scrap is paying for that endorsement.

Refining Basics

What is refining?

Precious metal refining is the process of purifying metals by removing impurities.

What are the precious metals?

The four primary precious metals are gold, silver, platinum and palladium

What is the daily price?

Metal prices are derived from exchange traded futures contracts and are constantly changing. For gold mailed to our refinery, we use The Second London Fix, which is a transparent and accepted average price of metal set at 10:30 EST.

Why are regulations important?

It’s important that your buyer is licensed so you can be sure that your scrap materials are stored and recycled as opposed to being illegally discarded.

What’s the difference between precious metals and base metals?

Precious metals resist oxidation and corrosion in moist air. Base metals include copper, lead, steel, iron, nickel & zinc.

What is amalgam?

Amalgam is used by dentists to fill cavities caused by tooth decay. It is a mixture of silver, mercury, tin and copper.

What are alloys?

Alloys are metals produced by combining two or more metallic elements

What happens to precious metals when I throw them in the landfill?

Some metals release toxic chemicals like lead, mercury or cadmium that are harmful to both people and the environment
